House Mice in Salina

The house mouse ranks as the number one rodent pest in urban and suburban environments in Salina. They are commensal, meaning they are generally found living close to humans because they’re dependent upon the human habitat for shelter and food. House mice can be found not just in homes, but also in commercial buildings, open fields, and agricultural lands. They contaminate food meant for humans and pets as they forage and drop feces and urine everywhere they go. House mice can cause considerable damage to structures through their incessant chewing. They also have a characteristic musky odor that reveals their presence.

House Mouse Habitat

Outdoor house mice construct nests in fields and beneath trees and shrubs. Indoor house mice seek quiet places like wall voids, kitchen cabinets, attics, and garages. If you see droppings, gnaw marks, tracks, or rub marks, it may indicate mice are active. Nests are made from finely shredded paper or other fibrous material.  Mice are active mostly at night, but they can be seen occasionally during daylight hours.

House Mouse Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

The house mouse is omnivorous but prefers grains and cereals. Seeking it out in your kitchen, they can leave behind pathogens like salmonella. Gnawing and tunneling through walls can also easily add up to major damage. Mice have also been implicated in starting fires and explosions by chewing exposed wires, causing interior walls to catch fire.
